I am pleased to be moderating “Sports, Carbon & Climate: Where We Go From Here,” a Green Sports Alliance webinar. Be sure to mark your calendars so you can join our All-Star panel Wednesday, October 16 at 1 PM EDT/10 AM PDT.

Despite being in an All-Impeachment, All The Time news environment over the last two weeks in the U.S., the climate crisis has finally gotten significant amount of mainstream air time.

From the Greta Thunberg-led youth climate strikes to a nationally broadcast climate town hall marathon amongst ten candidates vying for the Democratic party’s 2020 presidential nomination to two bi-partisan carbon pricing bills making their way through the House of Representatives, climate change is elbowing its way to the forefront of the nation’s consciousness like never before.

And that recognition comes none too soon since, according to the UN IPCC, humanity has 11 years at best to decarbonize by 45 percent in order for us to avoid the most calamitous effects of climate change.

While it’s great that awareness of the climate crisis is growing and demand for real action on climate is increasing, humanity is not nearly near where we need to be on both fronts.

The sports world, despite laudable efforts from governing bodies (IOC, FIFA and more), leagues (MLB, NBA, NHL, etc.), and teams (New York Yankees, Forest Green Rovers, University of Colorado Buffaloes, etc.) is also not where it needs to be.

With this backdrop, I am happy to moderate “Sports, Carbon & Climate: Where We Go From Here,” a Green Sports Alliance webinar on Wednesday, October 16 at 1 PM Eastern/10 AM Pacific.

An All-Star panel will discuss:

  • What is the sports world doing about the climate crisis?
  • How can the sports world do more on climate and do it faster and louder?
  • What kind of climate messaging and language will find a receptive audience among sports fans?
  • How should sports teams deal with the political nature of climate change?

Our panelist lineup is made up of:

  • Nancy Bsales: The expert carbon offset provider and strategist has helped manage sports-related offset programs for the NFL, NHL and US Bank Stadium among others.
  • Eric Fine: This climate change communications specialist and environmental leader at the outstanding Yale Program on Climate Change Communication (YPCCC) has a deep understanding of American attitudes about climate.
  • Steve Hams: As director of engagement for Business Climate Leaders, an initiative of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, Steve works to gain business support for a federal price on carbon. BCL and CCL currently support the Energy Innovation & Carbon Dividend Act of 2019 (H.R. 763), a bi-partisan bill working its way through the House of Representatives.
  • Kevin Wilhelm: The CEO of Sustainable Business Consulting, Kevin has worked with over 150+ companies. He helped develop and implement the Seattle Sounders’ (MLS) carbon neutrality program.

Audience questions are encouraged.

If you believe sports needs to make a bigger impact on the climate change fight and/or if you’re not sure how we should go about it, please join us for “Sports, Carbon & Climate: Where We Go From Here.” Click here to register.
