Climate Pledge Arena Reacts to Winning GSB’s “Greenest New Sports Venue of 2020”

Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena, the future home of the Kraken, the NHL’s newest team — set to begin play in the 2021-22 season — and the WNBA’s Storm, earned GSB’s GREENEST NEW VENUE OF 2020. Rosie Selle, the arena’s VP of Marketing, offered a comment.

When Amazon announced in June that it had purchased the naming rights to the home of the Seattle Kraken, the NHL expansion franchise that will begin play in the 2021-22 season, and the 2020 WNBA Champion Storm and named it Climate Pledge Arena instead of Amazon Arena, the ripples were felt well beyond the Green-Sports niche.

Which was the idea.

Amazon’s decision to call the building Climate Pledge Arena is the main reason GreenSportsBlog named it the GREENEST NEW VENUE OF 2020.

That wasn’t the only thing — the building, formerly known as KeyArena, is being renovated with a myriad of green elements, from the installation of solar panels to the conversion of all mechanical systems to electric power to subsidized public transportation to EV charging stations, and more — but, with apologies to Shakespeare, The Name’s the Thing.

“We’re so excited to be named GreenSportsBlog’s Greenest New Venue of 2020 and we’re looking forward to continuing progress on our sustainability goals in 2021,” said Rosie Selle, the arena’s VP of Marketing. “We hope Climate Pledge Arena will serve as a reminder to the world of the need for climate action and will be the blueprint for the sports and entertainment industry to tackle important issues in the future.”

As GSB noted when announcing the award on Tuesday, “every time the Kraken hits the ice or the Storm takes the court, millions of fans will hear broadcasters and PA announcers intone, ‘Live, from Climate Pledge Arena!’…The naming of the home of the Kraken and Storm as Climate Pledge Arena has the potential to be one of the rare marquee moments in the two decade history of the Green-Sports movement.”
