By As reported recently in GreenSportsBlog, Neste’s renewable bio-diesel fuel was used to generate the electricity that powered Super Bowl City in San Francisco last month. The Finnish company has produced a 3+ minute video that tells the story of this innovative sustainability partnership with the Bay Area Super Bowl 50 Host Committee.
Super Bowl 50 was the Greenest Super Bowl Ever, by far. How? Here are just 3 of the many ways it was able to earn that designation:
- It was played at LEED Gold Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
- Bottled water was not allowed in Super Bowl City, the fan fest that played host to 1,000,000 fans during the 9 days before the big game.
- Through an innovative program called Play Your Part, fans were provided with a meaningful incentive to take green actions (i.e. take mass transit to Super Bowl City)–a virtual currency called “Good Coins”–that they then would direct to Bay Area environmental non-profits. Those Good Coins were translated into actual dollars by the 50 Fund, the Host Committee’s charitable arm, with $200,000 fan directed dollars donated to the charities.
And, as mentioned in the March 15 issue of GreenSportsBlog, Neste, the world’s leading supplier of renewable diesel, became an official Sustainability Partner of the Host Committee. This cleaner burning fuel was used for the first time by a Super Bowl Host Committee to power Super Bowl City’s temporary grid with cleanly generated electricity.

Here’s hoping that the Super Bowl LI Host Committee in Houston will take a hard look at what took place in San Francisco and will consider using Neste’s renewable diesel next year. Given that Neste’s US headquarters is in Houston, this makes too much sense!
