Constellation Energy and the NHL announced a partnership that will result in the NHL becoming the first sports league in the world to completely offset its carbon footprint for an entire season.
The partnership, announced at a New York City news conference by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, key executives of Constellation Energy and Dr. Allen Hershkowitz, CEO of the Green Sports Alliance, will result in the offsetting, through Green E Certified Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) and Carbon Offsets, of 550,000 metric tonnes of carbon (the equivalent of avoiding the emissions from 50,000 homes.)
This is the first full-season carbon neutralization program for any professional sports league, anywhere in the world. Constellation will provide the league with technology expertise and best practices to allow it to reduce its carbon footprint over time.
Details to follow.
